Vermont State Police say a 22-year-old man was found dead in a Saint Johnsbury home today after he was involved in a standoff with local and state police.

Police say a .357 Magnum handgun was found next to the body of Virgel Gilseth this morning.

Police say Gilseth went to his father’s apartment last night to do the older man harm. Gilseth believed his father had called police about a burglary the son had committed.

But the father fled before Gilseth arrived.
When Gilseth did arrive he refused to come out and police brought in a tactical support team.

Negotiations broke down at about two a-m.
Police fired tear gas and flash-bang grenades, which are designed to disorient but not kill, into the apartment.

When police entered the apartment at about 8:30 this morning, they found Gilseth’s body.
