The Maine Medical Center in Portland will sever its relationship with the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 2011.

Maine Med is making the change to make way for a new physician training program with the medical school at Tufts University in Boston that will begin in the 2009-2010 school year.

Under the new program in Maine, students will spend their first two years taking classes at Tufts. Then they’ll go to Maine for the final two years.

Currently the UVM medical school sends about 28 students a year to Maine Med.

UVM medical school officials say Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington will be the school’s primary teaching hospital and it is “exploring options” as it seeks a replacement for Maine Med.
