Mace, the company that makes tear gas and pepper spray products, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of storing hazardous waste at its Vermont plant without a permit.

The U.S. attorney for Vermont says that Mace Personal Defense of Bennington has agreed to pay a $100-thousand dollar fine.

Mace and John Goodrich, who is the president of the Bennington facility, were charged with keeping hazardous waste in buildings at the plant and in shipping containers outside it. The company says it has spent more than three-quarters of a million dollars cleaning up the site.
