Lynch urges $16 million in cuts to NH budget

New Hampshire drivers could be riding over more miles of bumpy roads this spring if proposed budget cuts are approved.

Transportation Commissioner George Campbell told the House Finance Committee yesterday that he won’t be able to pave as many miles because money he had planned to use won’t be available. Campbell said he had dipped into the account used for state roads and bridges for repairs caused by December’s ice storm and floods last year.

Campbell said he planned to replenish the account with federal aid, but would have to use the money for other things if Governor John Lynch’s proposal to take $5 million from his department is approved.

Lynch asked lawmakers to approve a bill that saves $16 million overall by June 30.
