Lightning cracks Brattleboro church steeple

A lightning strike has cracked the stone steeple of All Souls Church in Brattleboro, raising concerns that the 60-foot spire could crumble to the ground.

The incident occurred Friday night, as musicians rehearsed in the 132-year-old church, raining chunks of concrete down on the street below.

A five-thousand pound granite cross has been removed from atop the church as a precaution, and the town has blocked off one lane of Main Street with concrete barriers, orange barrels and yellow police tape.

The building’s owner says it’s still structurally sound.
