When it comes to vivid recollections of 9/11 from someone who saw the devastation up close, it’s hard to surpass the experience of Lt. Colonel Barent Rogers, a member of the 158th Fighter Wing, Vermont Air National Guard.

Lt. Colonel Rogers joined the Vermont Air National Guard in 1997. He was hired as a United Airlines pilot in 2000 and became what he calls a traditional Guardsman that same year. On September 11th, 2001 his jet fighter was the first to enter air space over Ground Zero in New York City.

Rogers tells VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb the work day that started like any other when the first plane struck the World Trade Center.
