Library storage yields treasured finds

Civil War clothing, rare stuffed birds and a newspaper proclaiming the assassination of Abraham Lincoln are among the treasures found in a New Hampshire library’s storage.

The Winchester Public Library also had a safe hidden for years that contained town documents dating to the 1700s. One sheet of parchment was from town founder Josiah Willard asking for an extension to complete the requirements to incorporate the town. The town was incorporated in 1733.

The items were uncovered as part of a project to catalog the library’s treasures.
