Legislature weighs lottery expansion

The Vermont Lottery is planning to spend $150,000 on a study aimed at determining what it can do to make more money for the state.

The lottery already raises about $24 million a year for the Vermont education fund, but lottery officials say the study would probe various revenue-enhancement options, including scratch-off vending machines, more advertising and online gambling.

The study comes following Governor Douglas’ suggestion that Vermont lease its lottery to a private operator, an idea that hasn’t been embraced by lawmakers.
