(Host) Governor Peter Shumlin has pledged to oppose any increases in broad-based taxes. But he has proposed an annual bill that sets fees for a variety of different government services, from drivers’ licenses to air pollution permits.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairwoman Janet Ancel of Calais says this year’s bill is substantial because it covers a big portion of state government.

(Ancel) "Last year, the fee bill was a $400,000 fee bill. This year it’s close to $10 million. And that’s because the big agencies – Agency of Natural Resources and the Agency of Transportation – are included in this year’s fee bill."

(Host) Fees are reviewed every three years. This year’s bill includes the cost for some services provided by the Agency of Human Services.

The bill was introduced to the Ways and Means Committee Friday, and the panel has already begun reviewing it.
