Same sex marriage advocates are waging a more visible campaign than their opponents as the Vermont Legislature prepares to hear testimony on same-sex marriage.

The Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force has hired a lobbying firm, aired TV and radio commercials and staged a series of public events this week in preparation for the state Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings next week in Montpelier.

Same sex marriage opponents say theirs is a grass-roots campaign, and they have yet to make a big push. But the Rev. Craig Bensen, president of Take It to The People, says his group is raising money and that opponents will be out in force to lobby lawmakers.
