Leahy to Vote for Yucca Mountain Storage Site

(Host) Senator Patrick Leahy says it’s likely that he will vote in favor of a plan to build a nuclear waste storage facility in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. But Leahy says it’s critical that the Bush administration develops better security measures to transport these wastes to the site.

Speaking last night on VPR’s Switchboard program, Leahy says he supports the idea of creating a national site to store these wastes:

(Leahy) "But then the administration is going to have to need funding for the transportation and that’s where the real debate will come. How do you transport it? And so far they have not made a clear enough case, so it’s kind of a two-step thing. I think Vermont, the position of the governor, the Legislature, the Vermont Public Service Department, will get their wishes to have Yucca Mountain as a depository rather than the banks of the Connecticut River."

(Host) The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on this issue later this month.
