Senator Patrick Leahy is looking for public support for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Leahy chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, and next week he’ll be leading the first congressional hearing on repealing the law, which denies same-sex couples federal benefits related to marriage. DOMA also clears states to pass laws saying marriage is solely between one man and one woman.

Leahy says he believes same-sex couples deserve equal protection under the law. He’s urging people to contact their members of Congress to urge the law’s repeal. The hearing on the Defense of Marriage Act is set for July 20th.
