Leahy says Iraq no closer to resolving its civil war

Senator Patrick Leahy had a strong reaction to the testimony today on the Iraq War by General David Petraeus.

Petraeus told Congress he envisions the withdrawal of 30,000 troops by next summer, beginning with a Marine contingent later this month.

Leahy says Iraq is no closer to resolving its civil war than it’s ever been.

He says the U.S. presence there discourages Iraqis from taking responsibility for their future, and that the only answer is to begin bringing troops home.

Congressman Peter Welch had a similar reaction. He said the Petraeus report was only tactical progress used to serve a failed military policy.

Both Democrats said the country needs to begin to bring the troops home from a civil war.
