(Host) Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy says his decision to vote for the economic bail-out package approved by the U.S. Senate was a difficult one.

Leahy says he was convinced by the bill’s backers that even though the legislation is flawed and risks taxpayer money, Congress had to act quickly to head off a more costly crisis.

(Leahy) "There are no guarantees that you get your money back.  There is a total guarantee that we could have a meltdown in the whole credit system which will cost taxpayers a great deal more."

(Host) Leahy says the bill passed by the Senate was stronger than what was originally proposed by the Bush Administration because it provides for more oversight of how the bail-out money is spent.

Leahy’s Vermont counterpart in the Senate, Bernie Sanders, voted against the bill.
