League wants to use income tax to help fund schools

The Vermont League of Cities and Towns wants to increase the state income tax to help pay for education and reduce local property taxes across the state.

League Executive Director Steven Jeffrey says the current system, which uses a combination of a statewide property tax and school funding system, doesn’t work.

The league has sent a letter urging members of the Legislature to move on the income tax proposal.

The league’s membership voted several weeks ago to support the proposal, similar to the one looked at by the House Ways and Means Committee over the summer.

Opponents argue some school districts spend too much on fewer students.

The House Ways and Means Committee is scheduled to discuss the issue next week.
