The lawyer for suspended Vergennes police Chief Michael Lowe entered a not guilty plea on his behalf today to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs.

Attorney Richard Goldsborough says Lowe is at a substance abuse rehabilitation center in Florida.

Goldsborough says Lowe has been at the center since June and he’s due back this week.

Lowe was charged with DUI last month following a June traffic accident while he was driving a police cruiser.

Last week Lowe was charged with a number of other crimes, including embezzlement by a public official and neglect of duty.

Goldsborough says Lowe’s drug use is from a neck injury and later surgery.
