Vermont lawmakers are upholding a one-vote victory in a disputed legislative race.

The House Government Operations voted yesterday to validate the election of Democrat Sarah Buxton, who defeated Republican incumbent Rep. David Ainsworth – 881 to 880 – for the right to represent Tunbridge and Royalton in the Legislature.

Ainsworth challenged the outcome of the Nov. 2 election, saying ballots had been lost and that voters who don’t live in the district were allowed to vote. The state Attorney General’s office found no grounds for his complaint, and lawmakers voted along party lines to seat Buxton. The full House still must vote to make it official.

Buxton took her seat on January 5 while Ainsworth’s appeal was pending.
