Lawmakers To Debate Taxes

Vermont lawmakers are set to debate taxes.

This year’s miscellaneous tax bill contains an increase in a health care provider tax on hospitals and a new tax on health insurance claims.

It also includes a one-cent increase in statewide property taxes on both residential and nonresidential properties.

A group of Democratic and Progressive lawmakers is expected to propose an amendment raising the state income tax 1.25 percent for households with more than $75,000 in income. Gov. Peter Shumlin has said repeatedly that he is opposed to such broad-based tax increases.
