Lawmakers: Decommissioning tops Yankee agenda

Vermont lawmakers say the most important Vermont Yankee nuclear plant issue on their agenda is planning for the plant’s shut-down, not its re-licensing.

State Representative Tony Klein says his House Natural Resources and Energy Committee will act this week on a bill that calls for full funding of Vermont Yankee’s decommissioning fund. That fund contains money set aside to pay for mothballing the Vernon power plant once it closes.

Vermont Yankee’s owners, though, want permission to keep it open past its scheduled 2012 license expiration. They want a vote on that issue before lawmakers adjourn in May.
