(Host) The Vermont Senate has advanced the 2012 budget by a vote of 28 to 1. Progressive Anthony Pollina was the only ‘no’ vote.

Senators began to work through the legislation with floor debates this morning.

Appropriations Chairwoman Jane Kitchel of Caledonia County says the state had to balance spending without extra federal money this year.

The budget calls for almost four-point-seven billion dollars in overall state spending.

That’s almost $180 million less than the state is spending in the current fiscal year.

Lawmakers were able to balance spending by reducing in many areas, especially for human services.
