Key Vermont lawmakers and Douglas administration officials today are set to announce a series of steps designed to avert a crisis due to the high cost of heating fuel for next winter.

They’ve called a 2 p.m. press briefing at the Statehouse in which they’re expected to unveil plans to try to encourage the development of wood pellet manufacturing in Vermont.

Many home owners are installing pellet stoves this summer, because burning pellets currently costs less than half what burning home heating oil does. But there has been concern about whether there will be adequate supplies of pellets.

There’s also expected to be discussion about providing short-term credit for both fuel dealers and consumers.
