Lawmaker Proposes Legalizing Marijuana for Medical Use

Vermont lawmakers will consider legalizing marijuana for medical uses again this year. Progressive Representative David Zuckerman of Burlington has introduced a bill that would allow seriously ill people to grow and smoke the drug.

He says his bill would regulate marijuana the way prescription drugs are regulated and that the decision to use it would rest with a doctor and a patient. Patients would need a note from a doctor to grow the plant.

A similar measure was introduced last year but never got a hearing in a committee. This year, the chairwoman of the House Judiciary Committee says she’ll take testimony on the bill.
