Officials representing a Vermont landfill that has been subject to numerous odor complaints in recent months say they have a $1.1 million plan to control the problem and they have stopped accepting sludge that is the source of the odors.

Mary O’Brien, a spokeswoman for the company that owns the landfill, Advanced Disposal Systems, says they can’t change the past, but they’re promising to work closer with the town in the future.

Odor from the landfill along U.S. Route 2 and visible from Interstate 89 has been a chronic problem.

WCAX-TV reports work on the landfill has essentially halted after the company spent about $450,000 because the state hasn’t renewed the certification it needs to proceed.

The state will make a final ruling on the landfill’s permit in March.
