A fictional lake in a cold, remote section of New Hampshire haunts the characters of the new book "Lake People" by Abi Maxwell.

The debut novel tells the story of a young girl adopted by a childless couple after she was abandoned as an infant in a boat house, and the fog of mystery that surrounds her true origins. It’s a tale that unfolds over generations and is marked by loss, tragedy, and perseverance.

Abi Maxwell grew up in the lakes region of New Hampshire and makes her home now in Gilford. She spoke VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb about how she came to write her first work of fiction.
