Lake Champlain To Host Ice Boat Race

It’s far from boating season on Lake Champlain, except for those who glide on ice.

Ice boat racers are expected to turn out at Mallets Bay for the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association’s North American Championship this week, as long as the weather cooperates.

Races are scheduled to start on Monday and run through March 4.

DN boats got their name after the Detroit News sponsored a competition in 1937 to design a boat for racing on ice.

The wooden boats with two side runners and a front runner can travel up to 60 mph.

The Burlington Free Press reports that 59 boats had registered for the event as of last Thursday.
