Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says Lake Champlain’s dropping below flood stage for the first time in more than two months is an important milestone and shows the state is open for business.
The National Weather Service says the lake between Vermont and New York dropped below the 100-foot flood stage at about 3 a.m. yesterday, the first time the lake has been below flood stage since April 13.
The record-setting spring floods damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes around the lake and kept many businesses from opening. Now that the waters are down homeowners and businesses have to clean up the mess.
Shumlin says homes, shops, marinas and restaurants along the lake will recover — with some financial and volunteer help.
