A Supreme Court justice says putting court records online will make the information more accessible, while ensuring the protection of privacy.

The proposal has come under fire from lawmakers, who are worried that personal information would be placed on the Internet for all to see. But Justice John Dooley says Vermont’s model is based on that implemented by other states and the federal government.

The system scheduled to start up this summer would require someone interested in searching court records in Vermont to register online at the state Judiciary’s Web site.
