A jury hearing the case of a man charged with killing a University of Vermont student today is expected to hear a taped police interview with Brian Rooney.

The 37-year-old Rooney of Richmond is accused of raping and killing 21-year-old Michelle Gardner Quinn, after a chance encounter in downtown Burlington when she borrowed his cell phone.

She disappeared after that and was found dead six days later.

Yesterday, on the first day of the trial, the jury heard testimony from Gardner-Quinn’s parents and friends, whom she was with earlier on the night she disappeared.

Prosecutor Matthew Levine told jurors Rooney raped Gardner-Quinn and killed her to cover it up, while defense attorney David Sleigh derided the state’s case as guesswork and conjecture.
