A Milton junkyard owner has been ordered to pay $20,000 in civil penalties and reimburse the state $25,000 to pay for environmental testing on the property.

The penalties were levied this week against Gilbert Rhoades, owner of ABC Metals Recycling in Milton.

Rhoades was also ordered to remove an estimated 1.5 million to 2 million tires from his property within 90 days.

The Burlington Free Press says neighbors have complained about noise, the tires and possible groundwater contamination after the owners let their permits lapse in 2001.

The Rhoades have filed a series of largely unsuccessful court appeals in recent years in an effort to reopen their business.
