Three Vermont Air National Guard fighter planes are believed responsible for reports of strange lights in the sky over Anson, Maine.

The reddish-orange lights appeared Wednesday night, and at least four people called in to the county communications center to report what they’d seen.

As it turns out, the Vermont Air National Guard was conducting training maneuvers over the area that evening with three F-16 fighters. Guard spokeswoman Marie Endsley said there were flares that may appear to be reddish-orange.

The National Weather Service says there were no weather-related conditions Wednesday night that could have caused such sightings.
