The town of Jericho is using a refund of nearly $80,000 for police services that were never provided to help reduce local taxes.
The town was reimbursed after a former state police trooper fabricated time sheets and traffic tickets during six years on the job, including time he spent overseeing a state police contract with Jericho.
During the community’s Town Meeting Tuesday some 200 residents voted to use the money to lower taxes.
They later voted unanimously for the $3.5 million town budget.
Former Sgt. James Deeghan pleaded guilty in January to charges that he padded his timesheets. He’s serving a two-year sentence.
