Jeffords asks Ticonderoga mill to delay tire burn

Vermont Senator James Jeffords is calling on International Paper to delay a plan to burn tires at its mill in Ticonderoga, New York. Jeffords says International Paper needs to provide more information about the potential environmental impact of the project. And he wants Vermont officials to have a role in the permit review process.

The Ticonderoga mill is across a narrow stretch of Lake Champlain from the Addison County town of Bridport. Two weeks ago International Paper indicated it planned to test the burning of tires as a way to reduce the mill’s dependence on fuel oil.
