Isle La Motte residents voted overwhelmingly Saturday to use $100,000 that had been paid as restitution by former Town Clerk and Treasurer Suzanne LaBombard to cut the property tax rate – from about 23 cents per $100 of assessed value to 13 cents.
LaBombard pleaded guilty in September to the 2007 embezzlement. She repaid what she stole and the money sat in an escrow account for nearly three years. At Town Meeting, voters were asked whether to use it to pay down debt, reduce taxes or create a contingency fund.
LaBombard wasn’t present, according to the Burlington Free Press. She’s serving a 90-day jail term.
