(Host) Senior citizens who haven’t had to file a tax return for years have to reacquaint themselves with the IRS this year.

The economic stimulus package adopted by Congress and the president earlier this year promises $300 payments to seniors who earn at least $3,000 dollars a year.

But to qualify, they have to file a return with the Internal Revenue Service, even if they don’t owe any taxes.

Spokeswoman Peggy Riley says the IRS in New England will be working with seniors this weekend to help them fill out form 1040-A.

(Riley) "It’s a very simple return, but we know these people have not filed probably in a number of years and may need some help. So, we’re opening our doors this Saturday to help those people.”

(Host) The IRS office in the Courthouse Plaza building on Main Street in Burlington will be open on Saturday from nine to three to help seniors fill out the forms.

(Riley) "We have several volunteer sites that are located throughout the state that people can go to during the week. Some of them have weekend hours, as well. If you call our toll-free number you can get a list of the sites in your area.”

(Host) That toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040.

Income tax returns are due on April 15th. Senior citizens who don’t owe taxes – but want to qualify for the economic stimulus payment – have until October 15th to file with the IRS.
