Last Rights is not a religious book rights is spelled r-i-g-h-t-s in the title, but it does carry in part a spiritual message of hope for change in the way the medical community deals with people who are dying.

Stephen Kiernan started exploring end of life issues in the years he reported for the Burlington Free Press, and his interest on the topic grew from personal experience. Like many current baby boomers, Kiernan was
forced to confront his own parents’ end of life complications.

The subtitle of Kiernan’s book is Rescuing the End of Life from the Medical System . He spoke with Mitch Wertlieb about the book and says the great scientific advances that help people live longer lives these days have also created a new set of problems that aren’t being addressed:
