Interview: Smallpox Vaccine

(Neal Charnoff) Federal health officials announced this week that they are considering smallpox vaccinations for hundreds of thousands of emergency and health care workers, as a precaution against a bioterrorist attack. Health and Human Services officials say it could be up to states to decide which medical personnel to vaccinate.

Joining us on Morning Edition is Dr. Ann Fingar, the state epidemiologist for the Vermont Department of Health. Good morning, Dr. Fingar. First, could you give a little background on the smallpox vaccination?
