A roundtable discussion about race relations between the Brattleboro Police Department and the community was held last week, in a private meeting arranged by Chief John Martin.

Martin says the meeting was not held in response to recent accusations that officers in his department engage in racial profiling, but is part of an ongoing effort to get a balanced picture of the community’s perception of police and race.

The meeting included officials from the Vermont Department of Education, and the U.S Department of Justice. The discussion was not open to the general public, but the Chief did invite about 15 people from the Brattleboro Community he says represent a cross
section of the town. He spoke with Mitch Wertlieb about the meeting.
