John McCardell has been president of Middlebury College in Vermont for the past 11 years, but he announced yesterday that he’s resigning as president of the small liberal arts college, that’s nestled in the northwestern part of the state.

McCardell was Middlebury’s 15th president since its founding in 1800, and only the second to be selected from the ranks of the faculty. He joined the history department at Middlebury in 1976 after receiving his Phd. from Harvard. He plans to continue his teaching career at Middlebury.
