Interview: Howard Norman, ‘Devotion’

A new novel by Vermont author Howard Norman explores love and trust through the aftermath of a whirlwind romance.

The book is called “Devotion”. David and Maggie fall in love at first sight and engage in what is described as a fugue state of amorous devotion The book opens one day after the honeymoon, with David and his father-in-law William coming to blows following a perceived infidelity on David’s part. William is hit by a taxicab, and David must then nurse his father-in-law back to health, all the while wondering how he can regain Maggie’s trust.

Howard Norman has twice been nominated for the National Book Award. He lives in East Calais. He spoke with Neal Charnoff about his book.
