U.S. and Iranian officials concluded what many hope to be a first meeting between the two countries this morning.

The meeting between U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Iranian Ambassador Hassan Kazemi Qomi was the first diplomatic exchange between the U.S. and Iran in nearly three decades.

After the meeting in Baghdad, Crocker described the exchange as “businesslike” and said there was broad agreement on policy toward Iraq.

For many, the question now becomes: will there be a second-round of talks between the U.S. and Iran given the current instability in the Middle East?

Christopher Preble is the head of foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute in Washington D.C. He’ll be speaking at the School for International Training on Tuesday.

He spoke with VPR’s Nick Kaiser and said another round of talks between the U.S. and Iran is likely.
