Intervale composting may need to move

Vermont’s top environmental regulator says the state’s largest composting operation should not be located in the Burlington Intervale.

Natural Resources Secretary George Crombie says Intervale Compost Products, located on an ancient Abenaki Indian site along the Winooski River is in the wrong place.

The Intervale Center was cited in September for alleged violations of state environmental rules.

It was found to be storing bacteria-laden runoff in lagoons built without the required state permits.

Meanwhile, both Crombie and the head of a statewide composting association say Vermont should develop new rules to govern the fast-growing industry.
