International Paper gets DEC approval for tire burn

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has granted International Paper a final permit to run a two-week test burn of tire chips at its mill in Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain.

The permit was granted over the objections of Vermont officials.

DEC spokeswoman Maureen Wren says a time for the test to begin hasn’t been set, but the company has to give 30 days notice before it starts.

The Environmental Protection Agency approved the proposal with no comment.

Last week, Vermont Governor Jim Douglas and Attorney General William Sorrell said they would continue their legal battle to stop the test burn even after a New York judge rejected their attempt to block it.
