Police will be searching along the side of Interstate 89 in Vermont for the remains of a Burlington woman whose disappearance 32 years ago remained a mystery until her killer confessed last week.
The confession by 61-year-old William Posey brings closure to the family of Iris Brown, who was 27 when she was last seen in 1976.
Posey is serving a life sentence in a federal prison in North Carolina for kidnapping Brown. He is being held in a prison hospital reserved for terminally ill patients.
Posey told police last week that he killed Brown near the Shelburne Museum after she refused to sell cocaine with him, then dumped her body along the Interstate but can’t remember where.
Chittenden County prosecutors promised Posey they wouldn’t prosecute him in exchange for information about what happened to Brown.
