American snowboarder Kevin Pearce is no longer in critical condition.

Danielle Burch, a spokeswoman for Pearce’s family, said Wednesday that Pearce has improved to serious condition.

Pearce has a brain injury he sustained in a fall while training.

Burch says Pearce remains in intensive care at University of Utah Hospital, but his breathing tube has been removed. She says he is slowly regaining consciousness and is able to follow commands.

Pearce was hurt Dec. 31 in Park City while training on a halfpipe. He was preparing for Olympic qualifying events in California.

The 22-year-old from Norwich, Vt., is a top-ranked halfpipe rider.
