In Royalton, Dollar Store Fails To Win Act 250 Approval

A second dollar store proposed for Royalton has failed to win Act 250 approval.

The district environmental commission has denied a permit for a 9,100-square-foot Dollar General store near Exit 3 of Interstate 89. Last month, the commission refused to approve plans for a Family Dollar outlet proposed for the same area.

The commission based both decisions on the Royalton Town Plan which calls for limited retail development in the Exit 3 area, and specifies that it shouldn’t adversely affect businesses in neighboring villages.

The two large national discount chains have proposed a number of additional stores in Vermont and there’s been opposition in some communities.

A recent decision by the local development review board to approve plans for a store in Chester is being appealed by opponents there.
