Impeachment proponents turn attention to House

Proponents of impeaching President Bush are turning their attention to the Vermont House.

They say they’ll rally at the Statehouse this week and lobby representatives to pass a nonbinding resolution calling on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings.

The state Senate became the first legislative chamber in the country to pass such a resolution when it adopted its version last week.

The resolution calls for the impeachment of both the president and Vice President Dick Cheney.

House Speaker Gaye Symington says she doesn’t support impeachment because she believes it would distract from the more important goal of withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.

Advocates say they still want a vote in the House, so they’ll be at the Statehouse on Wednesday demanding action.
