The state’s largest private employer is preparing to reduce its costs, apparently with hundreds of layoffs. IBM executives weren’t taking calls Monday morning, but reports are emerging that 500 layoffs are underway at the plant in Essex Junction and Williston.

The job cuts reportedly were coming from the company’s manufacturing, management and research and development divisions. IBM employs nearly 7,000 people in Vermont.
