Deputy Grand Isle County Sheriff Ray C. Allen has been chosen to succeed his wife as sheriff.

The county Democratic party made the announcement on Monday.

He replaces 46-year-old Sheriff Connie Allen who took her own life on July 7.

The Burlington Free Press reports that Sgt. Allen of South Hero has been a patrol sergeant for 13 years, beginning as a deputy sheriff in 1991.

He’s also served as a manager at Allenholm Farms since 1983 and on South Hero Rescue for 15 years.

Allen’s name was forwarded to the governor by the Grand Isle County Democratic Party, from among three applicants for the job.

He’s expected to be sworn in by Gov. Peter Shumlin on Wednesday afternoon.
