Human Services faces painful budget cuts

Vermont’s new secretary of Human Services says that tough decisions will have to be made in the coming months about cuts to state programs.

Rob Hofmann says there are no easy places to cut the budget, in a year when there’s expected to be a $67 million budget shortfall that could grow next year to as much as $200 million.

Human Services is the largest agency in state government and it employs thousands of workers.

Hofmann says he thinks the programs are valid and beneficial and there are no obvious places to cut. But he says the cost of the programs is outstripping the ability of Vermonters to pay.

Hofmann is urging everyone to become involved in finding solutions and not just stand on the sidelines and complain.
