The Vermont House gave final approval yesterday to increases in the statewide school property tax.

If the Senate concurs, the statewide school property tax will go up 5 cents, to 94 cents per $100 of value for primary residences. Commercial and vacation properties will see their rate climb 6 cents, to $1.44.

The action came after lawmakers rejected a proposal from Representative Heidi Scheuermann, a Stowe Republican, to scrap Vermont’s current school funding system.

Scheurermann’s amendment called for creating a new school funding system by the 2015-2016 school year.

It was replaced by one offered by Representative William Lippert, a Democrat of Hinesburg. His amendment called on the House Ways and Means Committee to study Vermont’s school funding system and recommend improvements.
